One of these objects was a pot of poison (Halahala), which had the potential to destroy all creation.

The gods, petrified by the toxic fumes of the poison, sought Lord Shiva's help. Lord Shiva, demonstrating his compassion and selflessness, consumed the poison, holding it in his throat. The poison turned his throat blue, earning him the epithet Neelkantha (blue-throated).
